Winamac boys, Pioneer’s Dodt triumph at Caston Invite

Girls: Winamac finishes 2nd, Rochester’s Calloway takes 4th

FULTON — The Winamac boys cross-country team put three runners in the top 11 and went on to win the Caston Invitational with 64 points Saturday.

Winamac bested a field of 10 complete teams. Pioneer was third with 90 points, and Caston was sixth with 140. Rochester and Argos had incomplete teams.

Meanwhile, Winamac scored 57 points and took second behind Lewis Cass’ 44 points in the girls race. Caston was third among seven complete teams with 88 points, and Pioneer was sixth with 122 points. Rochester, Argos and Culver had incomplete teams.

Boys

Winamac’s scoring runners included Logan Fredel, who finished third in the field of 79 runners in 17:07; Dylan Guilford, who was seventh in 17:48; Nathan Pierzchalski, who was 11th in 18:24; Kannon Hoover, who was 26th in 19:38; and Joel Showley, who was 39th in 20:37.

“We did not know that we had won,” Winamac first-year coach Mike Haschel said. “We came in hoping to run our best and have some kids run their best times, but that was definitely unexpected.”

Delphi and Pioneer each scored 90 points, but Delphi took second place on the sixth runner’s tiebreaker.

Pioneer’s Leighton Dodt, a state qualifier last year, won the individual title in 16:35. He beat runner-up Ben Jay of Lewis Cass by 25 seconds. The Caston course is a triple loop around the school, and by the second loop, Dodt had freed himself from serious competition.

“It feels good,” Dodt said. “Last year, I started the season real rough, and my teammate Carson (Meyer) was beating me, and I want to do better than him every meet this year, and … the overall goal is state. Every race I just got to get faster. I got to get preparation for LaVern Gibson (site of the state finals in Terre Haute) because it’s a tough course at state.”

Fredel was seven seconds behind Jay.

The other Pioneer runner earning a medal was sophomore Dane Bowditch, who was eighth in 17:56.

Caston runners finishing in the top 20 included Reed Sommers, who ran an 18:47 and took 15th, and Kane Finke, who ran a 19:06 and placed 18th.

Rochester’s runners included Reece Johnson, who took 13th in 18:25, a 16-second cut in time from his Jacob Graf Invitational time at Logansport from Aug. 24; and Leandro Javier, who ran a personal-best 19:32 and finished 25th.

“I think Arlo’s finally learning that he can pick it up at the end of the race,” Gudeman said of Javier, referring to him by his nickname. “Especially when you’re a new runner at high school and those first few 5Ks, we really emphasize being able to pick it up at the end of a race. We call it changing gears, and I could tell two times he changed gears. When there was a half-mile to go and he got to the bridge, he picked it up again. I think he’s really getting the pacing for a good race down.”

Girls

Lewis Cass’ Aftin Griffin, who ran an 18:55 at last year’s state finals in Terre Haute, won her second straight Caston title in 19:26, handily beating the field by 54 seconds.

Rochester’s Allyson Calloway finished fourth and cracked the 21-minute barrier for the first time in 20:57. Gudeman calls Calloway “the queen of consistency” but added that in context, her time looks even better given how hard she has been training.

“It’s been two weeks since Logansport, and we’ve had two really good workouts since then,” Gudeman said. “So we know she’s been gaining fitness, though she had a really long week. This was her highest mileage week she’s ever had. She was almost at 40 miles this week, all included. She was a little tired, so I’m encouraged to see her still run that fast a time at the heart of our training season. I’m real excited. I think she can get low 20s by the end of the season, and who knows how she’ll finish at the regional?”

Winamac had three runners finish in the top 10 in senior Kadence Hoover, who ran a 21:01 and took fifth; junior Avery Wegner, who was seventh in 21:58; and junior Kandace Kroft, who was 10th in 22:15.

Other Winamac scoring runners included Claire Goodman, who was 15th in 22:55, and Madelyn Goodman, who was 39th in 25:14.

“I put the training together, and they do the work,” Haschel said when asked about his coaching style.

Haschel was then asked how training has changed since his days as one of Winamac’s all-time great runners.

“It’s definitely evolved from those days,” Haschel said. “There’s been things you learn every year. It’s definitely changed from those days quite a bit. … Everybody’s completely different. You can’t just paint with a broad brush. Some people, they do well with a lot of mileage, and some, you’ve got to be a little more cautious with that.”

Caston’s frontrunner was freshman Hannah Rogers, who took eighth in 22:09.

Pioneer’s Avery Haselby and Kylie Jamerson ran stride for stride and took 17th and 18th in 23:14 and 23:15, respectively.

Lexi Gibson, Argos’ lone runner, finished just ahead of that Pioneer duo in 16th in 23:14.

Culver’s frontrunner was freshman Coraline Day, who took 46th in 26:23.

In addition to Calloway, other Rochester runners included Brooklyn Chandler, who was 27th in 23:57; first-time 5K runner Adison Hayes, who was 45th in 25:56; and Emah Bradley, who cut her Logansport time by over three-and-a-half minutes and finished 74th in 35:10.

“She’s got the mentality I really like for distance runners,” Gudeman said of Hayes. “She’s a hard worker, and she pushed herself real hard. So I‘m excited for her, even as a freshman. I think she’s got a lot of potential.”
