Week 2 football roundup: Caston jumps out to 13-0 lead, but North White rallies to win

Knox routs Pioneer; Culver falls at home to West Central; weather stops Winamac game

North White 14, Caston 13 (Friday): Jabez Yarber ran for 121 yards and a touchdown, and Gage Minniear ran for 85 yards and a score, but the visiting Vikings rallied from a 13-0 first-quarter deficit for the win Friday.

Yarber also led the defense with 13 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Tucker Woolever had 10 tackles, Brayden Unger and Gavin Mollenkopf had nine tackles, Cameron McFatridge had seven tackles, and Ashtyn Peters and Noah Herd had six tackles each. Logan Mollenkopf had two passes defended, and Gavin Mollenkopf had one.

Caston did not complete a pass and lost three fumbles.

Minniear had a 78-yard touchdown run with 5:40 left in the first quarter. Yarber scored on a 51-yard run 1:55 later. Drew McGrew converted the extra point.

Chantz McCutchen threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Chris Williams, and Ben Sherrick followed with a two-point conversion run with 4:40 left to give North White the lead.

Caston (0-2) led 13-6 at halftime.

Knox 57, Pioneer 6 (Friday): Micah Rans ran for 146 yards and a touchdown, and he also completed a 19-yard pass to Shiloh Rine, but Pioneer (1-1) lost to host Knox Friday.

Noah VanMeter led the defense with five tackles, and Rine, Rans and Eli Guffey had four tackles each.

Knox had 465 yards rushing on 15 yards per carry and ran for eight touchdowns. They beat Pioneer for the third consecutive year.

West Central 28, Culver 16 (Friday): Jonas McCuen threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to David Hite, and Ethan Binion had a four-yard touchdown run for Culver in a home loss to West Central Friday.

Caleb McCuen had a pair of two-point conversion runs.

Culver led 16-14 after three quarters.

Binion led the offense with 44 yards rushing.

Kyle Lafary ran for 151 yards for West Central, including a 68-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Winamac at Frontier, no contest: The Winamac-Frontier game scheduled for Friday was declared a no-contest after a lightning storm Friday. The game was initially going to be postponed to 7 p.m. Saturday before being canceled.

“Frontier was unable to secure officials with all the other postponements in the state,” the Winamac athletic department said in a social media post.

This week’s rankings

  • Rochester dropped from No. 13 to a tie for No. 18 in this week’s Class 2A USA Today media poll. The only other team in Sectional 36 that is ranked is No. 11 Alexandria.

  • Tippecanoe Valley stayed at No. 8 in the Class 3A media poll. Other teams in Sectional 26 that are ranked include No. 16 West Noble, No. 17 Garrett and No. 18 Fort Wayne Concordia.

  • Pioneer is tied for No. 16 in this week’s Class 1A media poll. The only other team in Sectional 42 that is ranked is No. 3 Carroll (Flora).

  • North Judson is ranked No. 1 in this week’s Class 1A media poll. They are the only ranked team in Sectional 41.

  • Another ranked Hoosier North team is North Miami, who is ranked No. 14 in Class 1A. North Miami hosts Caston at 7 p.m. Friday.
