I. Whetstone makes consolation in 100 free

Tippecanoe Valley senior Marcus Smith will swim for a state championship in the 100 backstroke at the IHSAA state finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis today.
Smith was seeded seventh and qualified sixth in 49.56 seconds at Friday’s state preliminaries. He cut 0.88 seconds off his Warsaw sectional time Saturday and broke his own school record.
Center Grove’s Henry Lyness was the top qualifier in 48.26.
Smith also advanced to the consolation final in the 100 butterfly, tying for 10th place in 50.43 seconds and dropping 0.22 seconds off his sectional time.
Smith’s senior teammate Isaac Whetstone will also swim today in the 100 freestyle consolation final after qualifying 13th in 46.45 seconds.
Whetstone did not advance in the 200 freestyle as he finished 25th in 1:46.23.
The Valley 200 freestyle relay also did not advance to Day 2. The team consisting of Smith, Tucker Whetstone, Aaden Bowers and Isaac Whetstone placed 21st in 1:29.03.
Only the top 16 qualifiers in each event advanced to today’s finals, which start at 1 p.m. Admission is $15.
Carmel has won 10 consecutive team state titles.
