Pioneer’s Moolenaar, Colford also advance to finals

Girls swimming
Tippecanoe Valley sophomore Bailey Anderson and Culver junior Hayden Lute qualified for two individual finals at the Warsaw girls swimming sectional preliminaries Thursday.
Anderson qualified sixth in the 50 freestyle in 27.85 seconds and eighth in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.07. Plymouth’s Maja Siri Hendricks was the top qualifier in the 50 free in 24.91, and Manchester’s Rachel Garcia was the No. 1 qualifier in the 100 freestyle in 54.92 seconds.
Lute advanced in both distance freestyle events, swimming a 2:13.66 in the 200 and qualifying sixth and a 6:04.38 in the 500 and qualifying fifth.
In addition, Pioneer’s Aspen Moolenaar swam a 27.95 in the 50 freestyle and finished one spot behind Anderson in qualifying for the finals in that event. Teammate Cailyn Colford, also a junior, qualified eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.93 and also advanced to the finals.
Pioneer’s 200 medley relay team, which consists of Kamryn Newby, Colford, Ava Beasy and Moolenaar, also advanced to finals by qualifying seventh in 2:12.20. Culver Academy was the top qualifier at 1:55.60.
Anderson and freshman Mya Drudge formed half of Valley’s 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays that also advanced to the finals.
Maris Overbey and Claire Haney joined them on the 200, which qualified fifth. McKenna Lowe and Malia Kreft joined them on the 400, which qualified eighth.
Rochester did not have an individual or relay qualify for the finals.
Individuals advancing to the consolation finals included junior Aubrey Miller in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, sophomore Audrey Widman in the 100 butterfly and sophomore Lily Chipps in the 100 breaststroke.
Rochester also qualified 10th in the 200 medley relay, ninth in the 200 freestyle relay and 11th in the 400 freestyle relay and will wrestle in the consolation race for all three.
The 200 medley relay consisted of Kylie Haselby, Chipps, Widman and Miller. The 200 freestyle relay consists of Ava Thomas, Widman, Summer Tyler and Miller. The 400 freestyle relay consists of Seanna Gudas, Chipps, Jenna Seuferer and Thomas.
Valley swimmers in the consolation finals included Drudge in the 200 freestyle and Cassie Rich in the 200 individual medley.
Valley’s 200 medley relay team consisting of Sophia Becker, Rich, Kreft and Haney also advanced to the consolation round.
As for Pioneer, Colford also qualified for the consolation race in the 200 individual medley. Other consolation qualifiers included senior Kamryn Newby in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and sophomore Mykah Holcomb in the 100 butterfly.
The 200 freestyle relay group of Holcomb, Ellie Miller, Beasy and Brenner McLain also advanced to the consolation race as did the 400 freestyle relay consisting of Newby, Holcomb, Colford and Moolenaar.
Diving preliminaries start at 9 a.m. Saturday. Swimming and diving finals start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sectional champions plus those meeting a difficult state qualifying standard will advance to the state finals in the swimming events. The top four divers advance to the diving regional at Valparaiso on Tuesday.
