Valley finishes 15th at Peru regional, but Rickel, Crabb advance to semistate

Tippecanoe Valley senior wrestlers Colton Crabb and Remington Rickel advanced to semistate after finishing in the top four of their weight class at the Peru regional Saturday.

Crabb finished third at 175 pounds. Rickel was fourth at 150.

As a team, Valley scored 19 points and finished in 15th place out of 20 teams that sent at least one wrestler to the regional. North Miami won the team title with 136 points.

Crabb pinned Madison-Grant’s Sawyer Stepp in 1:45 in the ticket round. He then lost by fall in 47 seconds to Tri-Central’s Cory Dowden in the semifinals before bouncing back to win by fall in 1:53 over Huntington North’s Christian Jemison in the third-place match.

Rickel won a 10-3 decision over Kokomo’s Aiden Castillo to ensure his semistate ticket. He then lost to undefeated Northfield wrestler Elijah Gahl by fall in 2:57 in the semifinals and to Oak Hill’s Cayden Jones by technical fall (19-3) in 4:27 in the third-place match.

Both Crabb and Rickel will be making their second semistate appearances. Crabb made it last year at 165, and Rickel made it last year at 150.

Start time for the semistate is 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

Three other Valley wrestlers were eliminated in the ticket round at Peru. Kodiak Hillen (120) lost by technical fall to Western’s Brady Shannon. Thad Shambaugh (138) lost by fall to Western’s Liam Bumgardner. Diego Gonsalez (190) lost by technical fall to Western’s Brody Burns.
