Pioneer sports briefs: Klepinger scores 13, but Panthers fall to Rossville

Cripe nominated for player of week

Boys basketball

Rossville 42, Pioneer 34 (Saturday): Hunter Klepinger scored 13 points, but the visiting Panthers lost to Rossville, a defending Class 2A sectional champion, Saturday.

Christian Scott added seven, and Ezra Lewellen and Addai Lewellen had five points each.

Rossville led 21-14 at halftime, but Pioneer cut the deficit to 27-24 going into the fourth quarter.

Pioneer made more free throws (12) than Rossville attempted (9).

The win was the 100th for coach Cory Dunn during his seven seasons at Rossville. Including his previous time at Sheridan, he has 160 career coaching wins.

Girls basketball

Cripe nominated for player of week: Pioneer junior guard Hailey Cripe was nominated for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Franciscan Health player of the week award for District 1 girls for the week of Jan. 25.

Cripe scored 22 points against Winamac, 32 against Clinton Central and 15 against LaVille as Pioneer went 3-0 on the week. Cripe also scored her 1,000th career point against Winamac on Jan. 26.

The award went to Homestead junior Ayanna Patterson.
