Culver sweeps Argos behind Berndt, King

Culver def. Argos, 25-9, 25-10, 25-7 (Tuesday): Brynn Berndt and Tyra King had 10 kills each, and Ashley Pugh dished out 26 assists and had six digs as the Culver volleyball team swept Argos in a Class 1A, Sectional 51 quarterfinal at Culver’s John R. Nelson Gymnasium Tuesday.

Meredith Gordon had five kills and four digs. Ashlynn Berndt had six digs. Brynn Berndt had four digs and two blocks.

Culver had 22 aces, including 10 from Ashlynn Berndt and four each from Brynn Berndt and King.

Culver won their 12th consecutive match and improved to 25-5 on the season. They went 3-0 against Argos. Culver will face South Central (Union Mills), who received a bye, at 11 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals.

South Central beat Culver in four sets in their regular season meeting on Aug. 26.

Argos finished 3-25. They won more matches this season than the previous two seasons combined. They have not won a volleyball sectional title since 1973, and they have not won a sectional match since 2002.
