Girls wrestling
Both wrestlers representing Caston advanced to the regional from the inaugural IHSAA Western girls wrestling sectional Friday.
Emmeline Zabel finished fourth at 130, and Piper Roudebush finished fourth at 145.
The top four in each weight class advanced to the regional, which Rochester will host at 9 a.m. this Friday.
Zabel pinned Aubriauna Deweese in 1:02 in her first match to reach the semifinals. She then lost by fall to North Miami’s Lindsey Pugh in 1:33 to move into the wrestlebacks.
She then pinned Peru’s Marissa Roush in her ticket match before losing by fall in 31 seconds to Western’s Emma Roe in the third-place match.
Roudebush lost a quarterfinal match by fall in 3:47 to Manchester’s Grace Miller, but in the wrestlebacks, she pinned Viola Putnam of Peru in 2:33 to earn her regional ticket.
Roudebush then lost again by fall to Miller in 3:32 in the third-place match.
As a team, Caston scored 29 points and finished 12th in the 15-team field.
Pioneer also competed at Western, fielding a squad of three wrestlers and finishing in a tie for 10th place with 35 points.
Jaylyn Layman was the lone Lady Panther to advance, finishing third at 125. Layman lost by fall in 5:49 to Western’s Genesis Johnson in the quarterfinals, but she pinned Northfield’s Olia Leffert in 2:03 and Tri-Central’s Danya Wiseman in 3:55 in the wrestlebacks to earn her regional ticket. She then pinned Johnson in 2:55 in a rematch to take third.
Trinity Long (155) and Chelsea Clark (190) did not advance.
Western won the team title with 270 points.
