Boys: Dodt runs 16:44, joins Bowditch, Cooper as regional qualifiers

Girls: Caston’s Rogers, Hernandez-Rios, Lowe, Pioneer’s Jamerson advance as individuals

Leighton Dodt

Pioneer senior Leighton Dodt ran a 16:44 and finished sixth overall at the Logansport sectional Saturday as he began his bid to make the state finals for the second straight year.

Dodt and teammates Dane Bowditch and Elliott Cooper advanced to this Saturday’s Brownsburg regional by finishing among the top 15 individuals on non-advancing teams.

Dodt was third among individuals on non-advancing teams, Bowditch was 13th overall and sixth among individuals on non-advancing teams in 17:17, and Cooper was 34th overall and 13th among individuals on non-advancing teams in 18:50.

As a team, Pioneer scored 191 points and finished ninth among 14 complete teams.

Other Pioneer runners included senior Kaleb Boller, who finished 70th in 20:20; freshman Eli Hines, who was 73rd in 20:38; freshman Aayden Dimmock, who was 85th in 21:44; and junior Kevin Gluth, who was 91st in 22:01.

Meanwhile, Caston scored 312 points and finished 13th. No Comets advanced as individuals. Sophomore Reed Sommers was the Caston frontrunner, finishing 51st overall in the field of 99 runners in 19:33. Junior teammate Kane Finke ran a 19:39 and finished 53rd, freshman Isaac Albright was 56th in 19:40, freshman Jack Brumett was 79th in 21:06, senior Maxwell Sommers was 83rd in 21:23, freshman Tyler Remley was 87th in 21:54, and junior Josiah Helt was 92nd in 22:16.

Western won the sectional title with 62 points, and Kokomo (108), Maconaquah (130), Lewis Cass (130) and Northwestern (143) also advanced to Brownsburg.

Clinton Prairie senior Hayden Kemple was the individual champion in 15:44.

In the girls race, Caston finished seventh with 179 points, and Pioneer finished 10th with 242 points in the field of 11 complete teams.

Maconaquah won the sectional with 39 points, and Western (52), Lewis Cass (89), Logansport (140) and Frankfort (143) also advanced.

Caston regional qualifiers included freshman Hannah Rogers, who was 24th overall and fifth among individuals on non-advancing teams in 23:01; junior Camila Hernandez-Rios, who followed Rogers home at 25th overall and sixth among individuals on non-advancing teams in 23:05; and junior Alexa Lowe, who ran a 23:23 and finished 31st overall and eighth among individuals on non-advancing teams.

Myli Rude, who was 56th in 25:08; Emmie Lowe, who was 69th in 28:55; and Trinity Zimmerman, who was 75th in 31:41, rounded out the Caston lineup.


Kylie Jamerson

The lone Pioneer regional qualifier was senior Kylie Jamerson, who took 38th overall and 13th among individuals on non-advancing teams in 23:49.

Other Pioneer runners included sophomore Avery Haselby, who was 43rd overall in 24:11 and missed making the regional by nine seconds; junior Ellie Hines, who was 53rd in 24:59; senior Laylynn Malchow, who was 70th in 30:01; senior Allison Martinez-Domingo, who was 73rd in 31:09; and sophomore Asher Leis, who was 76th in 33:21.

Lewis Cass junior Aftin Griffin topped a field of 80 in 19:22 for the individual title.

The Brownsburg regional begins at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday with the girls race. The boys race will follow at 11:15 a.m.
