Argos hired Damon Binkley as its new athletic director at a school board meeting Monday.
Binkley is a 2015 Argos grad who is the school’s all-time leading goal scorer in soccer. He replaces Jason Breden, who left to become the new boys basketball coach at Knox. Breden held both the boys basketball coaching and athletic director positions when he left.
Argos hired Nick Kindig to coach the boys basketball team at the same board meeting in which Binkley was tabbed. Brian Jennings was hired as the new girls basketball coach in May.
Binkley scored 130 goals in his prep career, including a single-season school record 43 in 2013. He followed that with 37 goals and 15 assists in 2014, which led the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association to name him third-team all-state.
Argos won regional titles all four years during his playing career.
Binkley later played at Grace College, scoring 23 goals and dishing out 10 assists before graduating in 2019.
He had returned to Argos as an assistant coach on Todd VanDerWeele’s boys soccer staff. Last fall, when VanDerWeele could not continue coaching due to health reasons, Binkley took over as interim head coach and helped guide Argos to its 17th sectional title in school history.
Argos would add a win over Carroll (Flora) in the regional semifinals before the season ended with a loss to Park Tudor in the regional final.
Binkley’s sister Kennedy was a starter on Argos’ 2016 girls basketball team that lost to Jac-Cen-Del in the Class 1A state championship game.
Argos has a baseball coaching vacancy: Joe Kindig stepped down after a sectional loss to Culver last month.
