Fredel, Guilford advance to boys regional

Three Winamac runners broke the 23-minute mark to help the team finish fifth and advance to regional at the Rensselaer girls cross-country sectional Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Winamac boys scored 183 points and finished seventh out of 14 teams in their race. However, junior Logan Fredel and senior Dylan Guilford both advanced as individuals on non-advancing teams.
Kankakee Valley won the girls sectional with 23 points, and Rensselaer (88), West Central (104), Tri-County (105) and Winamac (115) also advanced.
Senior Kadence Hoover was the Winamac frontrunner, taking seventh overall in 21:23. Other Winamac runners included Avery Wegner, who was 14th in 22:34; Kandace Kroft, who was 18th in 22:55; Claire Goodman, who was 32nd in 23:57; Madelyn Goodman, who was 55th in 28:12; Mershai Loehmer, who was 61st in 31:07; and Jersey Himes, who was 66th in 34:48.
Hoover, Kroft, Avery Wegner and Claire Goodman were members of the Winamac team that won the sectional in 2023.
As for Fredel, he ran a 16:50 and finished fourth out of 92 runners in the boys race. He was also first among individuals on non-advancing teams. Guilford’s time of 18:05 placed him 18th overall and fourth among individuals on non-advancing teams.
Other Winamac runners included junior Nathan Pierzchalski, who was 45th in 19:24; freshman Kannon Hoover, who was 51st in 19:44; sophomore Joel Showley, who was 65th in 21:02; sophomore Zephir Perry, who was 77th in 22:06; and freshman Braylen Becker, who was 85th in 23:51.
DeMotte Christian claimed the team title with 44 points. Kankakee Valley (84), Rensselaer (100), Benton Central (107) and Twin Lakes (124) also advanced to the regional.
Kankakee Valley freshman Jenna Walker was the girls individual champion in 18:11, and DeMotte Christian senior Hunter Drain was the boys individual champion in 16:21.
The top five teams and top 15 individuals on non-advancing teams moved on to the New Prairie regional this Saturday. The girls race will begin at 11:30 a.m. Eastern, and the boys race will follow at 12:15 p.m.
