Pioneer senior Leighton Dodt and sophomore teammate Dane Bowditch broke the 17-minute barrier at the Brownsburg regional Saturday, but their seasons ended.
Dodt ran a 16:43 and finished in 66th place in a field of 247 runners. Bowditch ran a personal-best 16:56 and finished 80th. Senior Elliott Cooper, the third Pioneer runner competing at the regional, was 220th in 19:06.
The individual cutoff to make the state finals was 16:09.
Brownsburg won the regional on their home course with 47 points. Carmel (65), Zionsville (136), Avon (146), and Ben Davis (166) also advanced to state.
Ben Davis’ Abubakar Ibrahim was the individual champion in 15:04. A TRC runner, Lewis Cass sophomore Ben Jay, ran a 16:03 and advanced to state as one of the 15 fastest individuals on non-advancing teams.
In the girls race, the fastest area runner was Caston junior Camila Hernandez-Rios, who ran a 22:12 and finished in 156th in a field of 238. Freshman teammate Hannah Rogers was right behind Hernandez-Rios in 157th place in 22:13. Junior Alexa Lowe was 182nd in 22:52.
Pioneer senior Kylie Jamerson closed out her prep striding career by taking 208th in 23:32.
The cutoff to make the state finals was 19:43.
Carmel won the team title with 26 points. Brebeuf Jesuit (78), North Central (Indianapolis) (99), Indianapolis Chatard (106) and Zionsville (131) also advanced to state.
Indianapolis Chatard’s Julia Score was the individual champion in 17:17. Lewis Cass junior Aftin Griffin advanced to state as an individual in 18:39.
